One word describes it immediately: fruity. It feels like a mixture of blackcurrants and blackberries, with the tartness of the former counterbalanced by the softness of the latter. Two minutes in and I am reminded of Orbit, the blueberry-flavoured chewing gum from Wrigley's.
To be clear, there is nothing childish about Barénia. On the contrary, it is a serious and mature perfume.
The sweetness has a forest fruit syrup effect initially and it settles down to the perfect level rather quickly. It see the sweet component playing a unifying role and I would find the fragrance stand-offish if it were lower than this.
There are other facets to Barénia and they are not easy to describe. One of them, rubbery (not an accurate descriptor), reminds me of Exit the King by État libre d'Orange. Another one, spiky, could be common to the masculine H24, the edt, although it is much more behaved than in that one.
It also has something which I associate with drinking sparkling water. I am not talking about the fizziness, but about a sensation which it not quite metallic, so perhaps mineral is the word that I am looking for.
The fragrance follows a linear, horizontal path which means that it does not really evolves, the drydown revealing itself in the first minutes.
Overall, it does not scream, being calm and restrained. I am referring to both its olfactory character and intensity.
I must say that I found Barénia just ok at first. Only after multiple wearings I developed a fondness for it. In the end, it was worth the wait.
A very enjoyable perfume.
My verdict: 9 out of 10.
